Throws and Lapghan are among the most popular blanket projects in sizing with mine being the humble Lapghan. When working on a few WIPs (Works in progress) I find nothing more calming than going through rows of a Lapghan will large steel hooks to calm my hot and achy hands (But maybe that is just me!) Beginning a throw journey usually begins with a rectangular or square blanket shape. Blankets also make great heirlooms and gifts for anyone and everyone, with time adding to their charm and stories. Then there is the aspect of color especially accents that they can enrich a space with, tying it all together as the otherwise missing element without their presence. Be they a popular CAL along with many stitches and or squares joined or a simple garter stitch back and forth, the textures and colors are endless and can be made to bring the seasons into the home and to give the mind solace with a bout of relevant color therapy the soul is reaching for. Having a stash of baby blankets on hand is also a great way to have gifting's sorted in spring as well as try out a new garn you have been itching to wind through but do not know how it will play out or even if you will enjoy working with it. A small square baby blanket will give you that experience and can even be converted into large floor cushions or pet beds later. Right for purposeOften, I will see a throw or throw pattern and I instantly see it in a room or particular use and this brings up the question of sizing. I decided to set out and compile my sizing’s from Baby to Teen to Adults King sized Cali in inches and in cm, rounded off. Living in Australia it is also handy to incorporate Australian standard sizing for mattresses/beds in this blogpost for relevance to how a finished garncraft will sit and drape on the bed. With this knowledge one can adapt and make sure that any blanket is tweaked to fit to purpose. A King-sized Blanket is lovely but if it is to be used in the office to keep one’s legs warm as they work then is a King size appropriate or even safe? I say the latter after numerous times of getting stuck, twisted, or tripping up in my garn cocoon from behind the desktop or workstation. Lapghan blankets should be small enough to not touch the floor when a person is sitting down as it may get rolled over by the desk chair. A Lapghan size is more appropriate in this situation and finally after decades of garning I have finally got on my blanket game! Getting familiar with sizing that is adequate and fitting to purpose also helps in getting the right amount of yardage and in setting realistic garning finish time goals for a project.
