Oh the bane of hanging heavy items on a dry wall, as a renter and don't get me started on hanging curtain rods on a dry wall. Sorry I also hate curtains being hung on the window frame which shrinks a room, but it does seam the go to due to the obvious sturdiness issue of hanging curtain rods on a dry wall. Over the years I have come to love trusty dry wall anchors (metal ones - not those nasty useless plastic ones that come with your flat packs/furniture)and there is my purchase of a Hollow Wall Anchor Setting Tool and that made it even better. I like sticking to one brand and here in Australia I use the Ramset setting tool and anchors. I also like to purchase my hardware from local or builder supplies business opposed to large chain store hardware stores. It supports business owners who are more autonomous and helps to build relations with others in the industry and an opportunity to network/keep on top of events/trends/developments. Most small or local business owners these days also have an online store and ship. Suited for all metal, light duty, cavity fixing for plasterboard and other hollow wall materials/substrate. Each screw can hold a minimum of 10kg, with 3 different threads, varying thickness of items hung to accommodates up to 22mm and holes drilled 8 to 13mm for varying drywall thickness by Ramset. The screws;

How I set and Use the anchorsSafety first
Clear the area, ensure good 'natural if possible lighting' and minimal distractions. Be aware of underlaying electrical cables in the walls to avoid drilling them. For safety precaution turn off the power board mains/hit the safety switch just in case you do hit a any wires. Make sure not be stretching out in weird unstable angles to work, using ladder if need etc. Ensure hair is out of the way and if long braided back with no dangling tails when bent over and that long sleeves and pants are worn. When drilling not just dust but bits can fly off and get into or cut skin, not just eyes. Also unforeseen sharps can occur such as dropping a glass picture frame or sharp angles objects dragging across forearms or butting up against legs in weird angles, especially when one is carrying out the task themselves. Know where the first aid kit is and make sure it is quickly accessible and appropriately stocked and have an operational phone nearby if on ones own. Gather materials Including safety glasses, work boots, drill, wide masking tape, optional painters tape to tape out items outline/placement, carpenters pencil, spirit level, drill with 8mm, 9mm or 13mm drill bits suited to dry wall or masonry bits, phillip head screwdriver, items to hang including appropriate hardware such as picture frame wire or curtain rod brackets, Steel tape measure with locking slide/button, anchor setting tool and anchors. If unsure of the drywall thickness it can be handy to have a container of organized dry wall anchors on hand to make the call on the right size after drilling to observe drywall thickness. I like to have a work basket or tray (cleaning storage holders are handy) or even a tool belt can make the task easier by keeping things on ones person to avoid unnecessary trips up and down ladders and so forth. Plan and Measure After deciding on location to hang use the tape measure to check the hung item will fit and before committing to placement, step back visualize placement and even tap out the outline and walk in and out around the object tape outline a couple of times to ensure one isn't creating a inconvenience or health and safety issue with the items placement. On the back of item such as a mirror mask with the tape over the say two hook or screw hole/mount and then mark x on each one with the pencil. Gently peel off and place in the to be hung location lightly. Using the sprit level to straighten if need before sticking down with a bit more commitment. Drill Drill the required hole width in mm for the anchor such as 8 or 9mm. Blow out any dust/drywall residue or use a a dustpan brush to sweep over. Set Tap the anchor into the drilled hole until it is flush with the surface of the dry wall/substrate. Attach the hollow wall anchor to the head of the screw and squeeze the trigger to expand the anchor. (A a screw driver can be used instead of the setting tool, but I find a more rigid resulting hold with the setting tool - its a little like a staple or earring stud gun). Hang Remove the screw and place it through the item to hang such as the curtain rod bracket and screw into the anchor until item is fixed. In cases of a mirrored mount or holes to hang the hooks on the back of a mirror, simply keep the screw in the anchor only unscrewing to needed length to lock into the items mount/hanging holes. If one is on their own it can be better to have a sturdy low foot stool and even a scafolding ladder not just for high up hanging but also to hold the item as one braces to pick up the item and hang up. Finish Pack up, clean up, flip the electricity back on and enjoy :)
