How I added the Westerners tradition, of fitting voile or lace drapes to the glass paneled front door - ☽ ✧ - Δ - ✧ ☾ - When I recall movies and homes from the 70's through to the 80's, I'm not just struck by the use of my favorite colors of earthy tones, browns, orange, yellow but also the use of lace and feminine vintage still is there and the bohemian layers of yesteryears. But back to the homes, I remember the glass paneled front doors being fitted with voile or lace curtains. This door drapage not only offers better retention of warmth inside on colder days but also an extra level of privacy and security that adds to the typical bubble glass used on these front doors. Since moving into this house a year ago I have been wanting to recreate this decore but with a little difference, using bright orange dyed voile panels. All one needs to fit these panels is hook and loop screw ins for curtain wire and curtain wire itself. It is worth knowing that the voile panels I used had not only top feed through for the wire but bottom also. If such panels are unavailable, ordinary panels can be used and a bottom feed through can be sewn in. As for my choice of voile I dyed white voile panels orange to add a warm glow as the light shines through. Recently I had upcycled a pile of clothes of varying colors I don't wear into a golden yellow or with yellow tones with poly yellow dye I had stashed away. I have added a link at the end of this post on how to use the poly dye. Just switch to orange natural and poly dye for this orange effect. From Chapter 'fixtures' Overall Voile Dye Instruction; From white to rich orange... The orange natural and poly dye was heated in a large pot and the voile curtains were simmered over the lowest heat for an hour with the occasional stir. Half a cup of salt was added to the simmer to help color fast the voile and it is best to hang these wet, in order to dry out the creases for ironing voile is a tricky business.
