Easy shelving created in a space with not much room and limited wall access with red brick and magickal Ash wood 'Oengus Bag ban' (The boast of women as per the gaelic Ogham, language of the trees) - ☽ ✧ - Δ - ✧ ☾ - As per usual with my decor and DIYs there is nothing done without a purpose nor without a link to my magickal roots or European ancestors of old. With red brick and a long plank of Ash wood cut into 3 equal lengths, I created this bathroom shelf. Sitting beneath a macrame curtain with Ethel Runes knotted in, the sacred Ash glossed over with paint for protection from moisture, is symbolic of the world tree connecting all realms of existence 'Yggdrasil'. Sacred to my ale father Odin who hung himself in sacrifice on it in the search of magickal knowledge. The tree protected by the three witches 'The Nornes' and web weavers who guard its secrets blessed Odin with the gift of the 'Runes' for his sacrifice. "Nine whole nights on a wind rocked tree, wounded with a spear. I was offered to Odin, myself to myself, on that tree that none may ever know what root beneath it runs" Saemund Sigfussion, The Elder Eddas, translation by Benjamin Thorpe, London Norroena Society 1966) The Ash 'Bag maisi.i.garman' Cuchulain is "Boast of beauty, a weavers dream" one of the sacred trees of a druid's grove, and one of the chieftain trees in Brehon law known as Iundias. As a witch and druid my life's pursuit and purpose is the weave of the web, the fates and the connection to. So it's fitting to have this next to my bath where I often communicate to the fates or as I soak or burn copal for mother Freya. So in this light should you make a shelf such as this choose the wood from a source where you are connected especially with your ancestors. I did the same in my Altar and apothecary room which has a giant salvaged plank of Tasmanian Oak (Oak is druir in Gaelic and the namesake of us druids) A while back I built a tank stand for my 3 foot aquarium which is sturdy, not sacred wood as such but it gives an idea of possibilities. I have included a link to that post at the end of this write up. So much better than those flimsy stands ones spends an arm and a leg on.
